How Does the Tower Breathe?

  • Introduction

    Like a living organism’s respiratory system, the Tower has an innovative natural ventilation system that lets it “breathe.” Hundreds of windows can open to let fresh air in, while other building elements spread the air around and then exhale it.

  • Respond to the Weather

    It starts with weather. Designed to respond to its environment, the Tower uses weather stations to measure external temperature and humidity. When conditions are right, the Tower uses natural ventilation mode, which is common in spring and fall.

  • Feel the Temperature

    Different spaces have different needs, so the Tower also measures temperatures of the solar cavities between the two layers of the façade. Then the Tower determines the right level of ventilation for each floor and even for different floor zones.

  • Breathe In

    If conditions outside and inside the Tower are right, windows in the outer layer of the façade automatically open — and the Tower inhales fresh cool air. The interior layer of windows and doors also opens, so that air flows across floors.

  • Open Up

    Air shafts open throughout the building, as needed, so that cool air can spread across floors and warm air can rise up to the solar chimney at the top of the Tower. Warm air also flows to the top of the atriums and then into the same air shafts.

    Exhale

    The solar chimney, heated by sunlight and warm air, can reach 160°F. This creates an updraft, which pulls air inside, across floors, up air shafts, and out the top. The faster warm air moves through the Tower, the more cool air gets pulled in.

    Work in Comfort

    Employees can also choose how much fresh air they get. They can enjoy fresh air in the atriums, or open windows in the interior wall of the façade to let more air in. They can even open doors into some solar cavities to virtually “step outside.”

    Up to 67% of the Tower can be cooled with this natural ventilation system. It keeps the interior comfortable, reduces the need for mechanical heating and cooling, and, most important, saves energy.
